Sage PCN and NPI Legacy ID Update
As many of you are aware, May 23, 2008 is an important deadline for all of us. That’s the date when healthcare providers will be required to provide only their National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) on all Medicare paper and electronic claims for reimbursement. We expect most payers to follow Medicare’s lead, but it is very important that you contact your payers and understand their timelines for requiring NPI-only claims.
Over the past year the healthcare industry has been in a transition period with the payers; where the payers would accept both the NPI # and the legacy ID on the electronic and paper claims. The next step in the NPI process is to remove the legacy IDs from both electronic and paper claims.
The Sage PCN Health Network and Sage PCN MENDS systems are designed to allow you to suppress legacy IDs by payer. The instructions accessible via the links below walk you through the changes that you need to make to your system as you are notified that a carrier is ready to accept only NPI numbers.

As you are aware, Emdeon (our claims clearinghouse) has been and will continue removing legacy IDs on the electronic claims for those payers that no longer require legacy IDs. While we assume most of our clients send both electronic and paper claims to the payers, if you do not send paper forms to a payer, no action is necessary.
